RBI hasn't announced a Rs 2,000 note with a 'nano GPS chip' that it can track

View photos
Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have surprised India after he announced on Tuesday that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes would no longer be legal tender, but one part of the new system didn't come completely out of the blue. For a few days now, pictures of new Rs 2,000 notes have been floating around the internet and Modi announced that these will be issued for limited circulation soon. But those pictures also came with some rather fantastical rumours about these notes.
Trending
According to these rumours which were circulating on WhatsApp even before the demonetisation announcement, the new notes would come with what is variously described as a "micro nano GPS chip", which is supposed to be able to help track individual notes by way of satellite.
The technology even has its own serious-sounding abbreviation, NGC, and the rumours – some of which made their way to the mainstream media, like this Zee News post – "the chip has been fitted in such a way that it can detect Rs 2000 notes even from 120 meters below the ground."
That would be astounding, if it were true. Except it isn't. On Wednesday, the RBI dismissed the rumours entirely saying that such technology does not exist anywhere in the world.
According to the rumours, the technology would have meant that piles of cash would be detectable from space, making life much easier for police forces (and anti-corruption crusaders). And it's not impossible, even if it may sound so. American engineers have developed ways to embed radio frequency identification chips on paper in ways that could aid tracking.
Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa said that the new notes that will be introduced will be "high security", suggesting, as is routine, that new currency paper comes with added security features that make them harder to counterfeit. But he did not mention any tracking features.
When the Reserve Bank of India officially announced all the details about the new Rs 2,000 notes, however, there was no mention of any NGC.
There are a few interesting elements to the new note. Besides the colour, it will include a picture of Mangalyaan, the Indian spacecraft that made it all the way to Mars. Details about the currency does not include any mention of new security or tracking features, which presumably the RBI would want to advertise if they had implemented such technology.
Rumours might always insist that the government may not be telling us about the new technology – all the better to detect illicit cash piles once the notes are in circulation – but it seems unlikely that such information would be kept hidden, or that people would not discover the chips soon after they are out in the economy.
And even though the technology appears to be possible, barring fantastical notions of satellites being able to track piles of cash deep into the ground, it also might not yet be affordable enough to actually put on currency, even high-denomination notes.

16-Year-Old Indian Origin Boy Finds a Way to Make a Deadly Form of Breast Cancer More Treatable

Krtin Nithiyandam, a 16-year-old boy of Indian origin in the UK, claims to have found a way to make a lethal form of breast cancer more treatable. It is called the triple negative breast cancer and it is considered deadly because it does not respond to drugs. It is a kind breast cancer that shows aggressive tumour behaviour and poor prognosis. Usually, hormones like oestrogen and progesterone drive many forms of breast cancer. They get attached to the hormone receptors in the cancer cells and contribute to their growth. These receptors are basically proteins found in and on breast cells and they receive messages from hormones telling the cells to grow. When drugs such as tamoxifen are used during treatment, they block those hormones and inhibit growth of the disease. But such drugs are ineffective on triple negative breast cancer because these cancer cells don't have any receptors. An exhausting combination of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy is required to eliminate this kind of cancer, which in turn reduce the chances of survival.

Krtin, who moved to Surrey from India with his parents, thinks that he might have found a way of making the cancer respond to drugs.

Triple negative cancer manifests in two forms, based on which some women respond to medicines while others don't. One is the differentiated form, which produces healthy cells that are not very aggressive and grow and multiply slowly. The undifferentiated form makes the cells revert to a primitive form to never become recognisable breast tissue. They spread quickly and lead to tumour. "The prognosis for women with undifferentiated cancer isn't very good so the goal is to turn the cancer back to a state where it can be treated. The ID4 (Inhibitor Of DNA Binding 4) protein actually stops undifferentiated stem cell cancers from differentiating so you have to block ID4 to allow the cancer to differentiate," Krtin told The Telegraph, adding that he has  found a way to silence the genes that produce ID4. He also discovered that chemotherapy is more effective when the activity of a tumour suppressor called Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) is increased. And that a combination of these treatments could be more successful than the traditional cure, which uses several drugs. This therapy treatment idea was shortlisted for The Big Bang Fair programme that recognises various young scientists across the UK for their ground-breaking research. This is not the first time that Krtin is receiving international recognition for his research in the field of medical science. Last year, he won a grand prize at the Google Science Fair for his test that might spot Alzheimer’s 10 years before it is diagnosed.

Make this cooling almond sharbat this summer

Make this cooling almond sharbat this summer
Make this cooling almond sharbat this summer Another childhood memory. I was born and brought up in Haryana. Summers in Haryana get really hot and mercury hits 50 degrees Celsius. Food during summers had to be such that the body cools down is able to survive the heat. My mother used to prepare badaam ka sharbat at home, as the summer started in the month of April and till about August, we always had it with milk. It is very nutritious, is considered good for eye sight and also a home remedy for nose bleeding due to heat.
It can also be served with water. The flavours are very soothing and calming. Serve it as a welcome drink to your guests or give it to the kids after they sweat it out playing.
Apart from almonds, another key ingredient in the Badaam ka sharbat is musk melon seeds. Musk melon seeds are a great source of protein, Vitamin A, C & E, antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty Acids. Most of us nowadays eat the musk melon and throw the inner lining with the seeds. My mother used to soak the inner lining of melons in water overnight and clean it the next day to get the seeds. Dry the seeds during the day. During our summer vacations all of us used to remove the outer skin of the seeds. It took a little effort, but it was just one of the things that as a family we did together.
Cooking time: 30 minutes | Preparation time: 20 minutes | Total time: 50 minutes
Ingredients (For 1 bottle)
1/2cup- Almonds
1/4 cup- Musk melon seeds
1/2 tsp- Saffron
15 to 20- Green cardamom
2 Cups- Water
1/2- Lemon
Method
* Measure all the ingredients.
* Soak the almonds for two hours at room temperature. If you soak the almonds in hot water, the skin of almond may leave its colour on the almond. We want white almonds therefore I soak it in water at room temperature. It takes longer but gives better colour to the syrup.
* Wash and soak the musk melon seeds, too. Put sugar and water in a vessel and boil. Once the syrup starts boiling add lemon. Make syrup of single thread consistency. That means when you press syrup between two fingers a single thread is formed. Adding lemon will help collect all the froth on the syrup. Remove the froth and add saffron. Let the syrup cool down.
* Peel the green cardamoms and powder them using a mortar and pestle.
* After two hours, drain the water of almonds and musk melon seeds. Remove the skin of almonds. Put almonds and musk melon seeds in fridge for half an hour. After half an hour, grind the almonds and musk melon seeds (preferably without water). Mix the above in syrup along with powdered green cardamom.
* Store in an airtight bottle in fridge upto a month.
* Shake the bottle well before use as the almonds and musk melon paste will tend to settle on top of the bottle.
